About Denver Oktoberfest

The Denver Oktoberfest is one of the longest-running Oktoberfest celebrations in the United States, founded in 1969. The festival spans two consecutive weekends in September in Denver's Ballpark District at Larimer and 21st Street. General admission is free, with VIP packages available for purchase. The 2025 edition was the 55th annual, and 2026 will be the 56th.

The Story of Denver Oktoberfest

Denver Oktoberfest is one of the oldest Oktoberfest celebrations in the United States, and its roots run deeper than most people realize. When the festival launched in 1969, it was tapping into a German cultural heritage that had been woven into Colorado's identity for over a century. German immigrants were the largest segment of the state's foreign-born population before Colorado even achieved statehood in 1876 — so central to the territory's character that the Colorado constitution was published in three languages: English, Spanish, and German. Organizations like the Denver Kickers, established in 1962, kept German cultural traditions alive through the turbulent decades of the mid-20th century. The Oktoberfest that emerged in 1969 was a natural expression of that deep community heritage, not a manufactured event.

More than five decades later, the Denver Oktoberfest has evolved into a massive two-weekend street party in the Ballpark District, drawing over 350,000 fans to Larimer and 21st Streets in downtown Denver. General admission remains free — a rarity among festivals of this scale — which keeps the event accessible to the broadest possible audience. The festival's signature competitions have become institutions in their own right: the Stein Hoisting challenge tests old-world endurance, the Long Dog Derby sends dachshunds racing down the street, and the Sausage Eating Contest delivers the kind of spectacle that only competitive eating can provide. Add in keg bowling, costume contests, a talent show, live polka bands, a silent disco, and a VIP tent with cabanas and dedicated bars, and you have a festival that manages to feel both authentically German and unmistakably Colorado.

What makes Denver's Oktoberfest different from the hundreds of imitators that have popped up across the country is simply time. Fifty-six years of continuous tradition — surviving economic downturns, cultural shifts, and the general fickleness of festival culture — have given this event a legitimacy that newer celebrations cannot replicate. Nearly a million Coloradans claim German heritage today, and for many of them the Denver Oktoberfest is an annual homecoming, a two-weekend ritual where the Rocky Mountain West meets Bavaria under the wide Colorado sky.
