The Great American Beer Festival (GABF) is the largest ticketed beer festival in the United States and one of the largest in the world. Founded in 1982 by Charlie Papazian in Boulder, Colorado, the festival has grown from 24 breweries, 47 beers, and 800 attendees to a massive multi-day celebration featuring thousands of beers from over 1,500 breweries and cideries. GABF is produced by the Brewers Association and serves as the home of the premier U.S. beer competition, awarding medals across more than 100 beer and cider style categories.
In 2026, GABF will move outdoors for the first time in its 43-year history, relocating from the Colorado Convention Center to Levitt Pavilion in Denver's Ruby Hill Park.
In 1982, a nuclear-engineer-turned-homebrewing-evangelist named Charlie Papazian had an audacious idea: throw a festival celebrating American beer at a time when the country's entire brewing industry consisted of roughly 40 companies, with a handful of corporate giants controlling 99 percent of the market. When Papazian pitched the concept to legendary British beer writer Michael Jackson, Jackson's response was blunt: "Where are you going to get the beer?" Papazian got it — 47 of them, from 24 small breweries — and poured them for 800 curious attendees at the Hilton Harvest House hotel in Boulder, Colorado. The Great American Beer Festival was born.
What began as a five-hour gathering during the American Homebrewers Association conference quickly outgrew its origins. By 1984, the festival relocated to Denver, eventually settling into the Colorado Convention Center, where it became the anchor event for what Papazian and the Brewers Association were quietly building: an American craft beer revolution. Papazian — often called "the godfather of craft beer" — had founded the American Homebrewers Association in 1978, and GABF became the public stage for a movement that would transform the nation's drinking culture. By 2019, the festival was hosting over 60,000 attendees sampling nearly 4,000 beers from 2,300 breweries, with 322 judges from 18 countries evaluating entries across more than 100 style categories.
The GABF competition medals are the most coveted prizes in American brewing — small-town breweries have been made overnight by a gold medal, and the economic ripple effect on Denver's hotels, restaurants, and taprooms each October is enormous. In 2026, GABF enters its most dramatic new chapter yet: for the first time in 43 years, the festival moves outdoors to Levitt Pavilion in Ruby Hill Park, trading fluorescent convention-hall lighting for Denver's panoramic mountain views. It is a fitting evolution for a festival that has always been about proving American beer belongs in the open air.
