TAP New York is one of the largest and longest-running craft brew festivals in the country, founded in 1998. The festival has been attended by more than 100,000 beer lovers over its history. After previously being held at Hunter Mountain Ski Resort and Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, TAP New York relocated in 2025 to Blackthorne Resort in East Durham, NY, just 45 miles south of Albany. The festival showcases 50+ New York State craft breweries pouring 150+ beverages including beer, cider, mead, and mixed drinks, alongside continuous food sampling, live music, and games over a full weekend.
TAP New York was born in 1998 under a different name and at an unlikely venue: the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, where it debuted as the Hudson Valley Beer and Food Festival. The pairing of craft beer with one of America's premier culinary schools signaled from the start that this was a festival that took both halves of "beer and food" seriously. But the event grew so quickly that within just two years it had outgrown the CIA campus entirely. The organizers relocated to Hunter Mountain Ski Resort in the Catskills, renamed the festival TAP New York, and expanded its scope from the Hudson Valley to all of New York State.
The move to Hunter Mountain defined TAP NY for more than two decades. Nestled in the Catskill Mountains, the festival offered something rare in the beer festival world — a full weekend immersion rather than a single afternoon session. Attendees could camp on-site, hike the mountain trails, and spend days rather than hours exploring New York's craft beer scene. The brewery count grew steadily: about 25 by 2007, 40 by 2010, over 60 by 2013, and nearly 90 at its peak around 2015. Over its lifetime, more than 100,000 beer lovers have passed through TAP NY's gates, making it one of the largest and longest-running craft brew festivals in the country.
The festival's journey hasn't been without turbulence. After years at Hunter Mountain, TAP NY moved to Bethel Woods Center for the Arts — the site of the original 1969 Woodstock festival — before a 2024 cancellation due to what organizers described as "creative differences." In 2025, TAP NY found a new home at Blackthorne Resort in East Durham, about 45 miles south of Albany, where its weekend-long format with on-site camping, RV sites, and resort lodging feels like a natural fit. The 2026 edition runs May 15-17 with a Friday brew pairing dinner, a Saturday "Bacon, Brews & BBQ" session, and a Sunday "Brunch & Brews" — a format that reflects the festival's culinary roots stretching all the way back to that first gathering at the Culinary Institute.
