Oktoberfest Zinzinnati is the largest Oktoberfest celebration in the United States, held annually on Cincinnati's riverfront at Sawyer Point and Yeatman's Cove. Founded in 1976, the festival celebrates the rich German heritage of the Cincinnati/Southwest Ohio region. The 2026 edition marks the festival's 50th anniversary. Admission is free.
When a small group of civic boosters threw a block party on Cincinnati's Fifth Street in 1976, they were tapping into something deeper than a weekend excuse to drink beer. Cincinnati was built by German immigrants — by the mid-1800s, the neighborhood north of the Miami-Erie Canal was so densely populated with German-speaking families that locals called it "Over-the-Rhine." Breweries like Christian Moerlein and Hudepohl once lined the streets, and German singing societies, turnvereins, and beer gardens were the social fabric of the city. Oktoberfest Zinzinnati was born to celebrate that heritage, and it has never stopped growing.
From those humble block-party origins, the festival expanded to Cincinnati's riverfront at Sawyer Point and Yeatman's Cove, eventually stretching across four days with five performance stages, 40-plus food vendors, and the massive 300-foot Zinzinnati Festhalle tent seating more than a thousand revelers. In 1994, the festival etched itself into pop-culture history when it set a Guinness World Record for the World's Largest Chicken Dance, with over 48,000 participants flapping their arms in unison — led by the Crown Prince of Bavaria himself. That moment became as synonymous with the festival as bratwurst and polka bands.
Today, Oktoberfest Zinzinnati is recognized as the largest Oktoberfest celebration in the United States and the second largest in the world, trailing only Munich's original. Organized by the Cincinnati Regional Chamber, it drew a record 818,532 attendees in 2024 — and admission remains completely free. The Running of the Wieners dachshund race, the Gemutlichkeit Games, and Schuhplattler dance troupes give the festival a personality that is equal parts earnest tradition and joyful spectacle. In 2026, the festival celebrates its 50th anniversary, a golden milestone for a city that has never forgotten where it came from.
