Barrel & Flow Fest (formerly Fresh Fest) is the first beer festival in the United States dedicated to Black brewers, drinkers, and artists. Founded in 2018 in Pittsburgh, PA by Day Bracey and the creators of the Drinking Partners podcast, the festival celebrates Black culture through craft beer collaborations, live music, art, and entrepreneurship. It has been voted the #1 Brew Fest in America by USA Today readers for four consecutive years.
Day Bracey grew up in Braddock, a working-class town outside Pittsburgh, spent a decade in social services, then pivoted to stand-up comedy — drawn to the tradition of comedians like George Carlin and Richard Pryor who "spoke truth to power." In 2014, he and fellow comedian Ed Bailey launched the Drinking Partners podcast, weaving conversations about craft beer with deeper discussions about community and culture. Through the show, Bracey built relationships across Pittsburgh's brewery scene and noticed something troubling: the audiences at beer events were overwhelmingly white, and craft beer was being positioned as a middle-class luxury in a city where the Black community was disproportionately excluded from both the industry and its culture.
In 2018, Bracey turned that observation into action. Fresh Fest — the nation's first beer festival dedicated to Black brewers, drinkers, and artists — debuted at Nova Place in Pittsburgh with a radical founding requirement: every participating brewery had to collaborate with a Black artist or entrepreneur, develop a recipe together, and pay the artist to design the label. The first year featured 10 Black-owned breweries and 25 collaborative brews, drawing 1,200 guests. By its second year, attendance nearly tripled to 3,400.
Rebranded as Barrel & Flow Fest in 2021 (a nod to the 2005 film *Hustle & Flow*), the festival has since been voted the number-one beer festival in America by USA Today readers for four consecutive years. It has expanded into a three-day experience with a Black business conference, bottle shares, multiple music stages, catered food from Roux Orleans, a riverboat event on the Gateway Clipper, and a Sunday brewers brunch. Every brewery receives a stipend, every artist is paid above market rate, and every staff member earns a livable wage. In 2025, the brand expanded south with Barrels on the Bayou, a sister festival in New Orleans. What Bracey built is not charity — it is a new model for what a beer festival can be when equity is baked into the business from day one.
