Hunter Mountain Oktoberfest is an annual German-themed fall festival held at Hunter Mountain Resort in the Catskills region of New York. The event spans three weekends in late September and October, offering free admission with a focus on craft beers, Bavarian-style food, live music, and scenic mountain views. It has been recognized by USA Today's 10Best as one of the top Oktoberfest celebrations in the nation.
Most Oktoberfests take place in parking lots, fairgrounds, or convention centers. Hunter Mountain's takes place on the side of a mountain, with the Catskills blazing in peak autumn color behind every beer tent. That distinction — the marriage of Bavarian tradition with Catskill Mountain grandeur — is what has made this free fall festival a regional institution for more than two decades and earned it a spot on USA Today's 10Best list of top Oktoberfest celebrations in the nation.
Spread across three weekends in late September and October, Hunter Mountain Oktoberfest transforms a ski resort into a Bavarian alpine village. Now operated by Vail Resorts, the festival offers free general admission — making it one of the few major Oktoberfests in the country with no entry fee. Guests come for the authentic German and German-American entertainment on both indoor and outdoor stages, the Bavarian food vendors, and regional craft brews, but they stay for the uniquely mountain-flavored competitions: stein holding contests that test Bavarian-strength endurance, keg rolling races, and the crowd-favorite Doxie Derby, where dachshunds of every variety sprint for glory.
