Philly Bierfest is an award-winning midwinter beer festival honoring Pennsylvania's rich German brewing heritage, held annually at the historic German Society of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Recognized by USA Today's Reader's Choice Awards as one of the Top 10 Beer Festivals in America, the 13th annual edition in 2026 features more than 20 Pennsylvania breweries pouring German-style beers alongside 20+ authentic German imports in the German Beer Hall.
The festival sprawls across six floors of themed spaces within the German Society's historic building. Attendees experience Roller-Derby Arm-Wrestling, Berlin-Style BEERlesque, and live music from T.C. Cole and Polkadelphia's oompah-funk. VIP Plus ticket holders enjoy an exclusive guided beer seminar at noon led by drinks expert Marnie Old.
Philly Bierfest benefits three nonprofits: the German Society of Pennsylvania, Philly Roller Derby, and the Brewers of Pennsylvania. The festival showcases the state's leadership in brewing German-style beers while celebrating Philadelphia's deep German-American cultural roots.
Philly Bierfest was created in 2014 by the German Society of Pennsylvania and Marnie Old, a local wine and beer author. The German Society of Pennsylvania, the nation's oldest German-American cultural organization (founded in 1764), saw an opportunity to celebrate the state's brewing heritage through an immersive midwinter festival.
From the beginning, Bierfest was designed to be more than a typical beer festival. The German Society's historic Spring Garden Street building provided the perfect backdrop — six floors of ornate rooms transformed into themed beer halls, performance spaces, and tasting areas. The partnership with Philly Roller Derby added an unexpected edge, and the arm-wrestling tournaments became an instant crowd favorite.
Over 13 years, Philly Bierfest has earned national recognition, including a coveted spot on USA Today's Top 10 Beer Festivals list. The festival has grown while maintaining its intimate, culturally rich character — a celebration of Pennsylvania's German brewing traditions that feels nothing like a typical convention-center beer fest.
